Not An Ordinary Walk...
One of the best things you can do to get most out of your chiropractic experience is to regularly provide your body the motion it needs to keep all the parts working in harmony together. One of the most available ways to do this is to go for long daily walks.

Walking helps because a body that is well adjusted tends to use this motion to realign parts, flush out waste products, and improve circulation.

This is no ordinary walk though! We have become accustomed to believe that it is normal to walk on artificially hard and flat surfaces such as a concrete sidewalk. This leads to less than optimal amounts of motion and "balance challenges" that are available on natural surfaces.

Use it or lose it!

Just as a muscle atrophy's over time when not exercised, your sense of balance and body coordination diminishes if not regularly challenged. If is for this reason that I recommend walking on natural surfaces of changing terrain. Since almost 11% of Cook County is Forest Preserve, most of us in Chicagoland are fortunate enough to live near one. Don't waste this valuable resource! Take some time each day to go for a nice walk to unwind. Better yet, if possible start commuting via foot or bicycle to work. You will be astounded by how much better you feel.

The Devil is in the details...

A key recommendation I make is to utilize the correct footwear. Modern footwear tends to do too much of the work that the foot was designed to do. What direction do you think this moves you on the, "Use it or lose it spectrum?"

I believe that I have derived tremendous benefit from wearing my Vibram's. Plenty can be learned by visiting their website so I will not go into detail here other than to say that I LOVE MY VIBRAM'S! A great local source for these is Dick Pond Athletics of Park Ridge. Their knowledgeable staff can get you fitted and ready to enjoy the benefits of your fitness activities like never before.

I recommend that you walk a couple of miles each day on natural and changing terrain in shoes that simulate being barefoot.

What does this mean for me?

People who follow the above recommendations find that they are more flexible, sleep better, feel younger and have less subluxation. Since I have been walking to work my chiropractor has noticed less subluxation on me! This is expected when someone improves the health of their lifestyle. I am very thankful for this and I wish the same for you. What is stopping you for enjoying the same benefits?

Q & A: What can chiropractors cure?
I am often asked to list the conditions that chiropractic can cure. This questions reveals quite a lot about where the person is coming from. Realizing this, I have to be extra careful of my answer in order to help them arrive an a usable understanding.

Where should I begin?

In order to understand where health comes from, it is helpful to begin by understanding where life comes from. Chiropractic is unique in that it recognizes that life itself is the observable expression of intelligence.
As long as you are alive, you have an innate intelligence that is continually working to keep you at your best.

Since intelligence is the source of life and health, the only cure to any condition is expression of this intelligence through your body. Life is the only thing that cures! This is self-evident when you consider that a corpse cannot heal a broken bone or a scrape on the knee no matter what treatments are used. A corpse has all of the same parts that you do, but innate intelligence is no longer expressing itself through the body (no life).

Chiropractic does not cure any disease or condition. The job of the chiropractor is to locate and correct subluxation for the purpose of allowing for a better life (expression of innate intelligence through you). Not only does this give you a better chance of recovering from any condition, but it also results in more enjoyment and performance in anything you choose to do.

This is important whether or not you have any diagnosed diseases. How can you fulfill your life's purpose with less life expressed? What is stopping you from getting the chiropractic care that you deserve?

The Two Gifts...
Over the last decade of taking care of people, I have only begun to realize the importance of chiropractic's two gifts to the world. These are the Above Down Inside Out viewpoint (A.D.I.O.) and the quality of life improvements experienced from regularly getting adjusted.

What is so important about a viewpoint?

The viewpoint or perspective that you observe the world from determines, to a large part, how you experience life. Your viewpoint provides the context from which you interpret the content of the world. This affects the interpretations and conclusions that you make which results in the action steps that you take in your life.

Why would I need a different perspective?

The prevailing viewpoint today is called Outside In Below Upward (O.I.B.U.). O.I.B.U. views life and consciousness as the end result of random chemical reactions and "lucky" genetic mutations. Because of this, life is not viewed as intelligent and therefore any desired change to health or life experience must be induced from the "outside". This leads to advocating the manipulation of body function with drugs, procedures, or other therapies in an attempt to treat disease or symptoms of disease.

The participants in this system are the "all wise and powerful" physician and the "weak and helpless victim" patient. Health is viewed as the absence of invading enemy disease entities and symptoms, so the job of the physician is to cut, burn, or chemically manipulate the the body until it does what the physician or patient wants.

O.I.B.U. action steps are accompanied by many unintended consequences. Many municipal water supplies throughout the world are now contaminated with pharmaceutical drug residues. This means that even people who do not choose to subject themselves to this treatment are still being affected. Complications from the use of drugs and surgery are well documented, but the overlooked day to day effects of O.I.B.U. are easy to miss for those not familiar with this important distinction. O.I.B.U. breeds an irrational fear of germs, a distrust of one's ability to heal, and a general feeling of victim-hood among its participants. How could you ever feel safe if germs, hay fever, and flu were always out to get you and you believed that your body had to be chemically forced to do the right thing?

What is A.D.I.O.?

A.D.I.O. recognizes that intelligence expresses from Above Down Inside Out and that life and health result from the active organization of matter by this intelligence that is continually aiming to express itself better. Simply put, the foundational principle of A.D.I.O. is that life is intelligent!

Since health is the entity in A.D.I.O., efforts are focused on allowing for the best expression of the intelligence within you. Healthy food, proper stress management, healthy amounts of exercise, happy relationships, sleep, and chiropractic adjustments are encouraged.

Since the best doctor is the one that is inside you, the situation that you find yourself in is also viewed from a unique perspective. Instead of trying to control and dominate what is happening, A.D.I.O. teaches you to ask, "What is this revealing to me about my life situation?" The answers to this question lead to positive change and growth. Think: "Discover"; not "Control".

What does this have to do with Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a practical application within the A.D.I.O. viewpoint. The goal of chiropractic is to make sure that your innate intelligence is expressing itself as much as possible via the adjustment of subluxation.

What does this mean for you?

At first glance it might seem that this has no practical application, but, upon closer inspection, you will find that when properly understood this can influence every aspect of your thinking. The recognition that order bespeaks intelligence gives you a new way to view your health, happiness, performance and overall life experience.

One of the most exciting parts of taking care of practice members who learn to apply this is when they themselves discover new solutions and actions steps to solve their own problems. This is especially exciting because these solutions come from within them and are therefore more powerful and useful.

A.D.I.O. will set you on an exciting path of self discovery! Nothing could make me happier than, with this new perspective, to empower you to find your own solutions.

What would your health experience be if you regularly got enough sleep, ate nutritious foods, exercised, managed stress properly, and got adjusted?

What is stopping you from taking the necessary actions to express more of your health potential?

An Important Chiropractic Lesson From Watching My Garden...
Many of you who have spent time with me know how excited I am about my new tower garden. What you might not expect to hear about is the wonderful chiropractic lesson that was right in front of me the whole time!

Batten Down The Hatches...

With the unpredictable stormy weather, limited sunlight of a northward facing balcony, and an accidental unplugging of the water supply on a 105 degree day, my tower garden has had quite a rough life. Yet despite all of this, the plants are thriving and continue to grow! Day after day they seem to tirelessly continue to adapt and grow until the end of their life.

Where does health come from?

As a chiropractor we know that life is an expression of an inborn intelligence that is working through the organism. In the case of the plants, this intelligence works to keep the plant healthy and growing all the way up to the end of its life. No matter the conditions, the intelligence is constantly working to adapt the plant to the environment attempting to keep it as healthy and productive as possible. Those of you who have watched a garden for any length of time have no doubt seen plants grown and adapt to the most varied of circumstances.

Here is the good news!

The exciting part is that you have this same intelligence working through you too! From your first moment, your innate intelligence has been working to keep you thriving. This intelligence monitors and communicates with all parts of your body through your nervous system. Chiropractors check to make sure that there is no physical tension that is altering the way this system is working (subluxation). When the messages transmitted through your nervous system are altered, your innate intelligence cannot do as good of a job keeping you at your best.

The job of the chiropractor is to check you for and, when needed, provide a gentle adjustment designed to help you reduce subluxation. When this is done, your innate intelligence is then better able to express itself through you.

This is very exciting, because, just like the plant, your innate intelligence is constantly working to keep you as healthy and productive as possible! A better expression of life might mean that you can relate better with your loved ones. It may mean that you perform better in sports or at work. It may mean that you live a longer, healthier, and more vibrant life. Whatever it means for you, consistent chiropractic care leads to exciting changes in your quality of life.

Everyone deserves to live a fully expressed life. It is important to regularly get checked for subluxation, so stop in today. You will be happy that you did!
